소비와 모순의 유머 / The Humor of Consumption and Contradiction
이 작업은 오지에서 만난 사람들의 얼굴에서 시작되었다. 그들은 평범하지만, 삶의 무게를 견디는 강인함과 인간적인 품위를 지니고 있었다. 여행을 마친 뒤에도 그들의 표정이 마 음에 남아, 자연스럽게 오늘의 ‘소비 사회’라는 주제로 이어졌다. 나는 전통적인 인물의 모습 위에 명품 브랜드의 문양을 덧입혔다. 이 낯선 결합은 단순한 장식이 아니라, 현대 소비문화의 모순을 드러내는 장치다. 화려한 로고는 부와 욕망의 상징이지만, 그것이 노동의 흔적이 남은 얼굴과 만날 때 오히려 그 의 미가 해체된다. 그 순간, 고급과 서민, 중심과 주변, 현실과 허상이 뒤섞이며 아이러니한 유머가 생긴다. 나는 묻고 싶다. “우리는 진정으로 무엇을 욕망하고 있는가?” 그 욕망은 삶을 풍요롭게 하는가, 아니면 허상으로 대체되고 있는가. 결국 이 시리즈는 화려함의 이면에서 여전히 ‘사람의 얼굴’을 마주하게 하는, 소비 사회에 대한 나의 작은 질문이다.
They were ordinary individuals, yet within their expressions lay strength, dignity, and resilience. Even after returning home, their images stayed with me and naturally connected to the theme of today’s “consumer society.” I combined traditional portraits with the iconic patterns of luxury brands. This unfamiliar pairing is not merely decorative—it serves as a device to reveal the contradictions of modern consumer culture. The glamorous logos, symbols of wealth and desire, lose their meaning when layered over faces marked by labor and time. In that moment, the boundaries between luxury and ordinary life, center and periphery, reality and illusion blur into an ironic humor. I ask: “What do we truly desire?” Does that desire enrich our lives, or has it been replaced by superficial signs? Ultimately, this series is a reflection of our consumer society—a reminder that beneath the dazzling surface, there still remains the human face.
