흔들리는 것은 마음일 뿐이다, (非風非幡 仁者心動)
Nothing Moves but the Mind
모든 나무는 저마다의 ‘목성(木性)’을 지니고 있다. 어떤 것은 안개처럼 흩어지는 유연함으로, 어떤 것은 바위처럼 단단히 버티는 고집으로 존재를 드러낸다. “나는 렌즈를 통해 외형 너머 나무의 본질, 그 숭고한 성질을 탐구한다.”
햇빛을 쫓고 바람을 견디느라 제 몸을 비틀어 선 나무를 본다. 나는 소나무의 절개보다 그렇게 하찮아 보이는 것들이 지닌 가치와 살아내려는 강렬한 의지에 고개를 숙인다. 혹한 속에서도 몸을 지탱한 채 자리를 지키는 나무는 외치는 듯하다. “나는 지지 않는다. 살아낸다.”
나무에게서 인간의 생동하는 장기를 보았다는 에곤 실레처럼, 나 또한 잘려 나간 옹이와 뒤틀린 형상 속에서 강한 힘을 본다. 그 뒤틀림은 고통을 넘어, 살아 있는 존재의 온전함을 드러낸다.
나무는 사각형 밖, 작은 씨앗으로부터 왔던 본래의 자리 ‘초월의 자리’에 뿌리를 내리고 현재와 영원을 넘나든다. 프레임을 뚫고 나가 요동치며 경계를 넘어서는 형상은, 유한한 존재가 무한한 질서와 마주할 때 생겨나는 팽팽한 긴장감을 보여준다.
정사각형은 절대를 지향한다. 그 안의 형상은 고요해 보이지 않지만, 경계를 넘는 찰나 흔들림은 시작된다. 그러나 결국 움직이는 것은 바람도, 나무도 아닌 오직 마음뿐이다.

Nothing Moves but the Mind
Every tree possesses its own ‘Wood-nature’, revealing itself through misty fluidity or rock-like ‘tenacity’. Through my lens, I look beyond outward forms to explore the tree’s essence its sublime and sacred nature.
I observe trees twisting to reach sunlight or endure relentless winds. Rather than the conventional integrity of the pine, I bow before the value and the sheer will to survive in those that might seem “humble“. Amidst harsh gales, a tree barely supporting its frame seems to cry out: “I will not yield. I shall survive.
“Like Egon Schiele seeing human vitality in trees, I perceive formidable strength within the knots of severed limbs and contorted forms. This distortion is the wholeness of a living being transcending mere pain.
Rooted in the ‘place of transcendence’the original home from which they came as tiny seeds outside the square these trees traverse the boundary between the present and eternity. Their forms, surging and breaking through the frame to cross its boundaries, reveal a taut tension between finite existence and infinite order.
The square aspires to the Absolute. Within it, the shaking begins the moment a form crosses the boundary. Yet, in the end, it is neither the wind nor the tree that moves; it is only the mind.
