Mapping Seoul
도시는 수많은 건축물과 그 안에서 살아가는 사람들의 삶이 어우러져 만들어지는 거대한 무대이다. 특히 건축물은 도시를 대표하는 가장 눈에 띄는 요소이며, 시간이 흐르면서 끊임없이 변화하고 재편되는 존재이다. 오래된 건물이 사라지고 그 자리에 새로운 건물이 들어서며, 높이와 두께, 형태가 모두 다른 건물들이 한 공간에 함께 존재한다. 이러한 변화는 도시의 활력이며, 그 모습 자체가 나에게는 관찰과 기록의 대상이 되어왔다.
이번 작업은 ‘서울’이라는 도시를 중심으로 이러한 건축물의 특징과 가능성을 시각적으로 재구성하는 데에 초점을 두었다. 서울은 거대한 인구와 도시 규모에 비해 고층 마천루가 상대적으로 빈약한 도시이다. 이는 도시가 위치한 지정학적 조건과 다양한 규제로 인해 고도 제한이 적용되기 때문이다. 그로 인해 다양한 형태의 건축물이 충분히 들어서지 못하는 점이 늘 아쉬움으로 남았다.
이에 나는 서울 곳곳에 산재한 규모 있는 건축물이나 각 지역의 랜드마크에 해당하는 건물들을 모아 재배치하고, 각각에 색을 더함으로써 실제보다 확장되고 이상화된, 밀도 높은 도시 건축의 장면을 만들어보고자 하였다.
이 작업은 현재의 서울을 기록하는 동시에, 우리가 미처 보지 못했던 또 다른 서울의 가능성을 상상해보는 하나의 시각적 실험이다.
Mapping Seoul
A city is shaped by the interplay between its architecture and the lives lived within it. Buildings constantly emerge, disappear, and transform, forming an ever-changing landscape that I observe and record. In this project, I focus on Seoul and reinterpret its architectural character through visual reconstruction.
Despite its vast population and scale, Seoul has relatively few high-rise skyscrapers. Due to geopolitical conditions and various regulatory restrictions, height limitations are strictly applied throughout the city. As a result, the diversity of architectural forms has often felt insufficient.
In response, I collected and reorganized significant buildings scattered across Seoul, particularly those that function as local landmarks. By rearranging and adding color to them, I sought to construct a dense and idealized urban landscape—one that appears more expanded and intensified than the city as it actually exists.
This work serves both as a record of Seoul today and as a visual proposal for another Seoul that might exist beyond our habitual gaze.
