사막의 독백 / The Monologue of the Desert 

 

아프리카 나미비아의 사막에서 내가 마주한 것은 대자연의 풍경이라기보다, 빛과 어둠이 치열하게 경계를 다투는 거대 한 추상의 세계였다. 

강렬한 태양 아래 날카롭게 뻗은 모래 언덕의 능선은 화면을 대담하게 가로지르고,그 선을 경계로 순수한 白과 깊은 黑은 서로 타협없이 대치한다. 빛이 닿는 곳은 눈이 시리도록 밝지만,그 이면에는 필연적으로 삼킬 듯한 어둠이 드리워 진 다. 사막이라는 거대한 공간안에서 포착한 이 극명한 음영의 대비는, 내가 오랫동안 주목해 온 인간과 세상의 양면성 , 즉 ‘야누스의 두 얼굴’과 닮아있다. 

인위적인 기교나 왜곡을 배제한 스트레이트 흑백 사진(Straight Photography)은 이 본질에 다가가기 위한 유일한 선 택이었다. 화려한 색채를 걷어낸 자리에는 사막의 모래가가진 거칠고 날 선 질감과, 흑백이 만들어내는 묵직한 긴장감 만이 남는다. 부드러운 곡선 속에 감춰진 이 거친 흑백의 이미지는,어쩌면 우리가 애써 외면하고 싶었던 내면의 또 다른 모습일지도 모른다. 

이 완강한 흑과 백의 대비 속에서, 잠시나마 우리 삶의 겉과 속, 그 경계에 숨겨진 또 다른 얼굴을 조용히 들여다 보는 시 간이 되기를 바란다.

What I encountered in the deserts of Namibia, Africa, was not s o much a landscape of sublime nature as a vast abstract world in which light and darkness fiercely contes ted their boundaries. Under the intense sun, the sharply extended ridgelines of the d unes cut boldly across the image. Along these dividing lines, pure white and profound black confront one anot her without compromise. Where the light falls, the surface is almost painfully bright, yet an engulfing darkne ss inevitably gathers behind it. This extreme contrast of light and shadow, captured within the immense expan se of the desert, resembles the duality of humanity and the world that I have long contemplated the two fa ces of Janus. Straight black-and-white photography, stripped of artificial te chnique and distortion, was the only choice through which I could approach this essence. Once vivid color i s removed, what remains is the rough, sharpened texture of the desert sand and the weighty tension cr eated by black and white. Concealed within the softness of the dunes’ curves, these stark monochrome image s may reveal another aspect of ourselves one we have perhaps tried not to confront. Within this uncompromising contrast of black and white, I hope the viewer may pause and quietly contemplate the surface and interior of our lives, and the other face conce aled along the boundary between them.
